Biological challenges to conclusions from molecular phylogenies: behaviour strongly favours orb web monophyly, contradicting molecular analyses

چکیده

Abstract This first-ever extensive review of the construction behaviour orb webs, webs secondarily derived from orbs, and non-orbs shows that evidence favouring monophyly over convergent evolution orbs is stronger than previously appreciated. The two major orb-weaving groups, Uloboridae Araneoidea, share 31 traits, 20 which are likely to be both have feasible alternatives, making convergence an unlikely explanation. Convergence in lineages seems unlikely, five different lineages, as proposed some recent molecular studies phylogeny, even less credible. A further set seven shared responses design experimentally constrained spaces also supports monophyly. Finally, a ‘control’ case confirmed on similar ‘pseudo-orbs’ taxonomically distant group this argument, it low frequency behavioural similarities. I argue omission data web represents failure analytic techniques, not data, increases risk mistakes. In general, phylogenetic aim understand particular phenotypes can benefit including careful study themselves.

Haemoprotozoa: Making biological sense of molecular phylogenies

A range of protistan parasites occur in the blood of vertebrates and are transmitted by haematophagous invertebrate vectors. Some 48 genera are recognized in bood primarily on the basis of parasite morphology and host specificity; including extracellular kinetoplastids (trypanosomatids) and intracellular apicomplexa (haemogregarines, haemococcidia, haemosporidia and piroplasms). Gene sequences ...

Estimating Phylogenies from Molecular Data

Phylogenetic estimation from aligned DNA, RNA or amino acid sequences has attracted more and more attention in recent years due to its importance in analysis of many fine-scale genetic data. Nowadays, its application fields range from medical research to drug discovery, to epidemiology, to systematics and population dynamics. Estimating phylogenies involves solving an optimization problem, call...

GENIE: estimating demographic history from molecular phylogenies

UNLABELLED GENIE implements a statistical framework for inferring the demographic history of a population from phylogenies that have been reconstructed from sampled DNA sequences. The methods are based on population genetic models known collectively as coalescent theory. AVAILABILITY GENIE is available from http://evolve.zoo.ox.ac.uk. All popular operating systems are supported.

Inferring biogeographic history from molecular phylogenies

The present study illustrates a method for analysing the biogeography of a group that is based on the group’s phylogeny but does not invoke founder dispersal or centre of origin. The case studies presented include groups from many different parts of the world, but most are from the south-west Pacific. The idea that basal groups are ancestral is not valid as a generalization. Neither the basal g...
